We were having the same issue but noticed a few interesting things:ġ) Characters that were skinned in Maya with complete meshes and then had parts deleted after smooth binding did generate the skinned mesh renderer. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Interestingly if I leave at least 2 meshes in the Maya file and use smooth bind this issue does not occur. However, if I clear the history in Maya and then bind the mesh to the skeleton using the smooth bind in Maya, then when I import to the skeleton into the unity editor the skeleton has the smr component attached and the mesh does not. The mesh has the skinned mesh renderer(smr) component attached and the skeleton just has a Transform and FBXImporter (as expected). When I just save this file as is and import it to unity, there are no issues. I deleted everything from this file except for the skeleton and one clothing item (so for example the hoodie). I wanted to save each of these clothing meshes in their own Maya file. This file basically contains the female skeleton and a variety of clothing item meshes. I imported the female.fbx file into Maya. I came across this when I was playing around with the character customisation example project : This does not happen when I use Rigid Bind in Maya. When I use smooth bind in Maya, and then try to import this file into unity, in the unity editor the Skinned Mesh Renderer is attached to the skeleton and not the mesh. a human skeleton, with just one mesh such as hair, or pants). Basically I have a Maya file containing a skeleton and a mesh that covers part of the skeleton (e.g.

I was investigating different possibilities for how to arrange my data when I came across a strange problem. I want a character customisation system for my game. I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem before, and might know what is happening? I am new to Unity, and have been having a really strange problem with importing some Maya files.

Make sure that it's rigged well enough to where the elbows and knees are where they should be, and that the head moves how it should. For elbows and knees, you'll have to play it by eye to find where they are, you can usually find those based on where there are wrinkles. Make sure to activate symmetry because Fuse's models are symmetrical and you are safe to do so. Now that you're on, follow the prompts to rig your model. Mixamo is aware of the problem and is working to resolve it.
